Kargil organization seeks rethink on Cluster University decision

Anjuman Jamiat ul Ulama Asna Asharia Kargil, Ladakh, has opposed higher education department’s decision to start the new Cluster University (CU) Ladakh from satellite campuses of Kashmir University (KU) at Leh and Kargil.

The Anjuman has written a letter to the Governor Satya PalMalik, seeking revocation of the higher education department’s decision.

“The  people  of Kargil are disappointed by this  decision as the KU’ssatellite  campus  Kargil has successfully  endeared itselfto  the people  of  Kargil by providing  quality  education at their  doorstep. The campus is oneof the most successful and vibrant campuses of Kashmir University. It hassignificant enrolment of students and is improving every year,” reads theletter.

Earlier, students of KU’s Kargil campus protested againstthe department’s decision. Also, the KU administration has sought rights overthe land and conveyed to the HED that the quantum of land to be retained by thevarsity will depend on the Master Plan requirements and spread ofinfrastructure by the varsity.

Meanwhile, the letter addressed to the Governor reads thatthe Cluster University of Ladakh can be best located in the Government Degree Colleges of Kargil and Leh.

“It will help in the establishment of post-graduate coursesin the respective colleges. This will further improve the infrastructure andfacilities in the colleges of Kargil and Leh,” reads the letter.

The Anjuman has, however, appreciated the role of Governoradministration for the appointment of vice-chancellor and registrar for theCluster University.

In December last year, the state Administrative Council(SAC) headed by the Governor approved a bill to set-up a CU in Ladakh.

Five degree colleges, presently affiliated with the KashmirUniversity (KU), which will act as constituent colleges of the ClusterUniversity include one each in Leh and Nobra (in Leh district) and one each inKargil, Zanskar and Drass (in Kargil district).

“We demand that the J&K higher education departmentshould withdraw its plan to acquire the 600 KanaIs (out of 700 Kanals) ofsatellite campus Kargil for the campus of Cluster University as doing so woulddirectly affect the quality of education being provided at the SatelliteCampus  Kargil,” the letter reads.

The letter reads that the people of Kargil are not ready tolet an inch of this campus for any other institution.

“We request your good  self to rethink on your  decision for lead college  of Cluster University of Ladakh at analternate location without disturbing the well-established satellite campus,”the letter reads.
