Kashmir, Banihal shut against mass arrests, assault on Article 35A

Life was paralysed in Kashmir valley on Sunday due to a protest shutdown called by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) against mass arrests and a legal challenge to Article 35A.

All shops and other commercial establishments are closed in Srinagar and other district headquarters of the Valley. Public transport is off the roads.

Authorities have imposed restrictions in areas falling under the territorial jurisdiction of five police station areas in Srinagar city.

JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik has called shutdown in Kashmir against the arrest of Yasin Malik and a crackdown on Jama’at-e-Islami.

They have also urged people to observe shutdown in defence of Article 35A which is likely to come up for the hearing before the Supreme Court on Monday.

A complete shutdown is also being observed in highway town of Banihal. All shops and businesses units are closed in response to the JRL call.
