Kashmir police constitutes SIT to probe Kupwara minor’s death

Jammu and Kashmir Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of a minor in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The half-burnt body of Umar Farooq (10) with a chopped arm was recovered from a nallah on Thursday evening, three days after he was reported missing.

The third standard student of Gulgam had gone missing around 4pm on Monday. His disappearance triggered massive protests in the area with people blocking the Kupwara-Chowkibal road to demand his whereabouts.

His father identified him from his clothes on Thursday after his body was fished out from the nallah.

A police spokesman, in a statement, late last night, said that a SIT has been constituted to investigate his death.

“This pertains to the missing report lodged in Kupwara about a minor boy Umar Farooq of Gulgam. The effort to trace this boy of our community/police since the day of his missing was on,” he said.

Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Kupwara will head the SIT while SSP Kupwara will supervise the investigation.

Police has also sought cooperation of general public for completion of the investigation, said the spokesman.
