Kashmir shuts against Handwara killings

The call for shutdown was issued by the both factions of Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front.

A complete shutdown against the killings of two youths and a woman in army firing in Handwara town and restrictions imposed by the authorities have paralysed life in Kashmir today.

All shops, business establishments and schools are closed today while public transport remained off the roads in capital Srinagar.

Reports of shutdown have also been received from other district headquarters of the valley.

Authorities have imposed curfew-like restrictions in Rainawari, Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Khanyar, Safakadal and Maisuma area of Srinagar.

District Magistrate Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Lone has said the imposed restrictions will not apply to the members of the Sikh community who are free to move about in areas placed under restrictions because of the Sikh festival of Baisakhi.

The burial of the two youth killed on Tuesday has still not taken place and it is expected the burial would take place on Wednesday.

Curfew has also been imposed in Handwara town where tension has increased further after reports of death of another civilian reached the town.
