Kashmiri student attacked in Chandigarh

A Kashmiri engineering student survived a murderous attack by a group of seven students at his rented accommodation in Chandigarh on Friday night.

The student, Musbashir of Balhama, Srinagar, told Greater Kashmir that the assailants, armed with knives and iron rods, entered his room and beat him up.

“They hit my legs and arms with iron rods,” he said.

Mubashir said he was taken to Suhana Hospital, Mohali, for treatment.

“Later, these students called me and said they had some misunderstanding and attacked me mistakenly. But if it was a misunderstanding they should have given me a chance to speak to them before they attacked me.”

He said though he has filed a complaint with the police, the college authorities gave him a “cold response” when he approached them.

Mubashir’s uncle Zahoor Ahmad urged the police to ensure safety of Kashmiri students studying in educational institutions across India. He appealed to the director general of police to intervene as “the family has been disturbed” by the incident.

Assistant commissioner Kashmir Qazi Irfan has asked the president Chandigarh group of colleges that appropriate action should be taken so “that the student is able to pursue his studies without any fear”.

Administrator of the college Anoop said the incident occurred at the rented residence of the student, which is 10 km away from the campus.

“I was informed today morning by the students. They also identified some students who attacked Mubashir,” he said, adding the assailants would be called on Monday and “action will be taken accordingly”.
