Kathua case backlash: Two police officers injured after IUST students clash with police

Two police officers were injured after protests over Kathua rape-and-murder case turned violent outside Islamic University of Sciences and Technology (IUST) Awantipora on Wednesday.

Reports said that police swung into action after the students of the varsity staged protests on the Srinagar-Jammu highway at Awantipora, triggering clashes.

SSP Awantipora told Greater Kashmir that the students pelted the police with stones as they were trying to push them inside the varsity to ensure free movement of vehicles on the strategic highway.

The students pelted heavy stones on the police, leaving SDPO and SHO Awantipora injured, he said. “Both were shifted to a hospital for treatment.”

The students alleged that the police men barged inside the varsity and damaged the vehicles parked inside.

Following the clashes, IUST management has suspended the class work.

PRO IUST, Aijaz Qureshi said there is no alternative than to suspend the class work under the prevailing circumstances.
