Kathua child rape-murder: J&K RTI movement organises torch-bearing protest

J&K RTI Movement (RTIM) organized a torch bearing protest at Press Enclave here demanding setting up of a fast track court to ensure speedy justice in the case of 8 year old Kathua gang-rape and murder victim.

Scores of RTIM activists assembled here and were joined by several other people including children. The protestors with torches and placards appealed for justice to the victim child and demanded the culprits be hanged.

“Government should set up a fast-track court to ensure justice to the victim family. We also demand that action should be taken against the Jammu Bar Association for trying to put hindrances in the case,” Raja Muzaffar Bhat, chairman RTIM, said.

While lauding the officers of the Crime Branch and advocate Deepika Thusoo for playing “an honest role in the case”, the RTIM members said, “We will support any move aimed to bring the perpetrators of the brutal rape and murder to the book. We also want strict action against two BJP ministers who rallied for the accused in the case,” they said.

The protesting activists also called for justice to two young Shopian women who had become the victim of rape and murder some years ago, and Kunanposhpoora rape victims.

Meanwhile, scores of traders in at Lal Chowk here hit streets demanding exemplary punishment to the culprits in the Kathua rape and murder case. The traders threatened mass agitation in the event the government failed to deliver justice.

The traders under the banner of Lal Chowk Traders’ Association marched along the Residency Road here holding placards reading: “Hang the killers”, “Justice for victim”. They raised anti-BJP and anti-PDP slogans.

“We won’t tolerate any delay in delivering justice to the victim. It is unfortunate that the BJP-PDP did not speak up when their ministers were rallying for the culprits”, said Deen Mohammad Mutto, member of the traders’ association.

“We won’t sit back unless culprits are hanged publically and we also want the BJP ministers to be arrested for supporting the accused,” he said.

The traders’ body said that some people in Jammu rather than supporting the victim’s family had “threatened to boycott their whole community which is unacceptable.”

“Certain sections of people in Jammu want the Gujar Bakarwal community to leave Jammu. We want to tell them that Gujjar Bakarwal community is not alone, we are with them”, the traders said.

The traders while shouting anti-Modi slogans, said ‘PM’s Beti Bachao slogan is a hoax.”
