Kulgam civilian, militant killings: police version

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday said that six civilians were killed in a blast at the site of a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

“In Kulgam encounter while three militants of JeM outfit were killed, in the aftermath of the encounter when a large congregation entered the encounter site before it was cleared led to an explosion in which six people died,” said a police spokesman.

   

The slain militants were  identified as (1) Shahid Ahmad Tantary S/o Ab. Rashid Tantary R/o Wangam Shopian, (2) Zubair Ahmad Lone S/o Manzoor Ahmad Lone R/o Ahwatoo Kulgam and (3) Yazil Ahmad Makroo S/o Mushtaq Ahmad R/o Arwani Bijbehara  and arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot.

“Moreover, after the conclusion of encounter as the forces moved out, the locals from the area started assembling at the site of encounter and had apparently fiddled with some stray explosive materials leading to an explosion,” said the spokesman.

“Consequently some individuals sustained grievous injuries and some of the injured identified as Ubaid Shah, Tajamul, Irshad Ahmad Padder, Uzair Ahmad & Masroor Ahmad unfortunately succumbed when brought to hospitals, besides five other injured are undergoing treatment. It is pertinent to mention that this incident occurred post encounter.”

“Citizens are requested not to visit any encounter site until the site is sanitized by the bomb disposal team. We seek cooperation of people in this regard for avoiding accidents of such nature.”

“Police has registered a case in this regard and investigation has been initiated.”
