Kupwara gunfight: toll mounts to ten with killing of third soldier

The death toll toll in the ongoing gunfight in Halmatpora area of the frontier district of Kupwara mounted to ten with the killing of two militants and five forces’ personnel on Wednesday.

A police offcial said that policemen and as three army soldiers were killed in the exchange of fire with the militants hiding in Check FatehKhan forests today.

   

Two militants were also killed in the firefight raging since yesterday afternoon today, taking the total number of militants killed in the gunfight to five.

The slain policemen were identified as Sgct Deepak Thusoo and SPO Mohd Yousuf while two army men were identified as Sepoy Ashraf Rather of 160 TA and NK Ranjeet Kholka of 05 Bihar.

“Earlier in the exchange of fire, one SPO namely Javaid Ahmad was also injured and subsequently shifted to hospital for treatment .His condition is stable,” said a police spokesman.

Intense firing is on between forces and the militants for past over an hour, said the official.

“The last militant is still responding to the forces intermittently as it appears the gunfight has entered into the last stage,” added the official.

The gunfight began yesterday afternoon after Jammu and Kashmir Police along with 41 RR, 160 TA, 98 Bn CRPF and 162 Bn CRPF launched a search operation in Halmatpora forests.

“While the search was going on, the hiding militants fired upon the search party .The fire was retaliated by the security forces ensuing an encounter,” said the police spokesman.
