Moughal was under detention in police chowki Awoora (Kupwara) and his body was found from the premises of district hospital Kupwara.

The family of Nazir Ahmad Moughal—the detainee who died in mysterious conditions two days back—Friday reiterated that he was killed in custody and the cops involved in the incident should be punished forthwith.

Moughal was under detention in police chowki Awoora (Kupwara) and his body was found from the premises of district hospital Kupwara.

“My husband Nazir was killed by police after being subjected to third-degree torture. The cops demanded money from him,” alleged Naseema.

“On February 6, I handed over my husband to chowki officer Zurhama after his assurances that he will be set free. This happened in presence Sarpanch of Bagoo Malik area Bahadur Khan and Shabir Ahmad, younger brother of my husband,” Naseema said.

She said the cops handed over Nazir’s body to them on February 11. “He had injury and burn marks all over his body, indicating he was ruthlessly tortured in custody,” she said.

“He was kept in police custody and then beaten. He was then taken to Kupwara hospital and then brought back to the police chowki Awoora where he died.”

Naseema said some police officers are shielding the cops involved in Nazir’s killing.

“They are trying to give this case a different twist. All police officials responsible for the killing of my husband should be arrested,” she demanded.

“Who will take care of my five children? They are too young to earn a livelihood,” she said.

Naseema said her eldest son Sharafat is 13, daughter Insha 11, Layakat nine, Sayma six and Jaffar three-year old. “They are too young to earn and support the family,” she said.

Sayma is sitting in a corner of the room when tears trickle down the eyes. Suddenly, all the children start wailing slowly.

“I want exemplary punishment to the killers of my husband,” she demanded.

The police however claim that Nazir complained of chest pain and was taken to hospital where from he escaped and his body was retrieved the next morning.
