Less participation of people in polls warrants introspection: Tarigami to political parties

Senior leader of CPI (M), M Y Tarigami on Tuesday said that the less participation of people in election warrants introspection from political leadership.

In a statement here Tarigami said, “The indiscriminatearrests of youths across Kashmir and particularly in southern districts of theValley in the recent times will erode people’s trust in the government furtherand widen the gulf which would be difficult to bridge.”

“As the response of people in the just concluded Lok Sabhaelections was not so encouraging in south Kashmir, it warrants introspectionfrom the political leaders, particularly from those who are at the helm ofaffairs in Delhi. Muscular security policy has neither worked in the past notthere are any chances of it yielding any results in future. It has only addedthe complexities of the situation,” he said.

“Such policy is a disservice not only to the people of Jammuand Kashmir but for the whole country if political leadership refuses to drawlessons from this unfortunate experience. The deepening political uncertaintyin Kashmir has got compounded due to the disastrous policies of the BJP governmentin Delhi. Kashmir is in constant chaos and the new realities are being sketchedunder the shadow of guns and the BJP’s aggressive Kashmir policy,” Tarigamisaid.

He said, “The Centre’s policy of viewing everything throughthe prism of security and with rabid ultra nationalistic overtones hascompounded the problem further. Security-oriented approach overtaking thepolitical outreach will end up being a loss for the people of Kashmir and tothe country as a whole. What is urgently required is to shun the path ofconfrontation and repression and initiative a credible process of talks withall stakeholders.”
