Himalayan Welfare Organization (HWO) has approached the High Court against Government’ move to lift the ban on hazardous polythene bags.

A spokesman of the organization in a statement here said: “The state government has silently lifted the ban on polythene, despite an earlier High Court order banning polythene in the state in 2006.”

“The move is clearly contempt of the High Court's order and is a ploy to benefit manufacturers of polythene bags at the cost of larger societal environmental concerns,” he added.

Mushtaq Pahalgami, President, Himalayan Welfare Organization, Pahalgam has moved the J&K High Court by sending in an application to admit a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the matter and has also urged the wider society, civil society organizations, academic community and media to come out and stand together in opposing the move and in saving the environment.
