The residents of Tumpora Magam Tuesday expressed resentment against the Department of Education for not providing adequate space to Government Upper Primary School situated at Tumpora village of Magam area in north Kashmir, creating hardships for the students.
The residents said that though schools across Kashmir valley were set to open from March 1, lack of basic amenities and space had always been a concern for the government schools and Government Upper Primary School Tumpora was an example of all this mess.
The school building with only three rooms had been built in 1987 and never renovated since then.
“The building has developed several cracks and poses a threat to the students yet the authorities are unmoved,” said a local.
According to residents of the area, more than 110 students are enrolled here with five teachers deputed here.
“How is it possible to accommodate nine classes and office in three rooms,” said a parent.
Muhammad Amin, a resident of the area, said, “Our children are made to study under the open sky. At the time of inclement weather, they are being adjusted in the three rooms, which is telling upon their studies.”
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Zonal Education Officer Handwara Shabir Ahmad said that he would write to his higher ups for augmentation of space and till then some make-shift arrangements would be made so that students do not suffer.
