Militant killed in Handwara encounter

A militant whose identity is yet to be ascertained was killed in a gunfight on Thursday in Sodal Chek Magam, Handwara, Kupwara district, an army official said.

The official said army soldiers, policemen and CRPF soldiers launched a search operation in Sodal forest area after being tipped off about the presence of militants.

   

In the ensuing gunfight a militant was killed. For now the exchange of fire between the two sides has stopped but the searches are on, the official said.

Meanwhile, militants attacked and injured five CRPF soldiers in Bijbehara town of southern Kashmir.

The five soldiers of 90 battalion were taken to sub-district hospital Bijbehara for treatment.

The injured were identified as Ominder Singh, Pankaj Kumar, Nitin Kumar, B Kumar and Yoginder Singh.

“All the injured have are stable,” a health official told Greater Kashmir.

Soon after the incident, the government forces launched massive searches in the area to nab the attackers

Meanwhile, Militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has claimed responsibility for the attack on a CRPF party in Bijbehara.

“Cadres of the outfit lobbed a grenade on CRPF bunker at Zerpora Bijbehara. In the attack more than five CRPF men suffered injuries,” LeT spokesperson Dr Abdullah Ghanzavi said in a statement issued to GNS.
