A minor boy, working as a domestic help, allegedly tried to eliminate his owner’s family by poisoning them at Zachaldara, Handwara here in north Kashmir. However, his (boy’s) attempt was foiled, Police said on Sunday.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Handwara, Ghulam Jeelani, while talking to Greater Kashmir said, “The minor boy (Basit Ahmad) a ninth class student added insecticide Kohibaan, to the milk with the intention to kill the family members of Raja Tariq Nawab Khan of Rajwar Zachaldara. The boy was staying with the family from past two years. Besides helping the family with odd jobs he (Basit) used to go to school as Khan had promised his (Basit’s) family members that he would take care of all his expenses and make him pursue his studies.”

The SSP said, Basit on Friday morning added insecticide into the milk containing vessel and left to fetch bread from the market for morning tea. “After the insecticide was added to the milk vessel it started emanating a foul smell. Wife of Raja Tariq Nawab Khan took a note of the foul smell. She told her husband that there is something wrong with the milk. Khan informed the Police Post Zachaldara and requested the Police to help the family to ascertain the facts,” he said adding that the police officials went on the spot and tried to put the things together.

The SSP said that during preliminary inquiry and questioning, it was revealed that Basit tried to kill the family as he wanted to run away with the Scorpio vehicle owned by the family. “Basit told me he wanted to take away Scorpio vehicle after killing them,” Jeelani said adding that the insecticide was recovered from the backyard of the house where he (Basit) had concealed it.

The SSP said that poisoned milk was seized along with the vessel for its analysis and case FIR No.40/2017 u/s 328,511 RPC has been registered against the said juvenile at Police Station Handwara.

Basit, the SSP said, has been remanded by Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Handwara to juvenile care unit at Srinagar. Further, the investigation into the matter would unveil the facts and circumstances of the instant case, he added.

Locals of Zachaldara village said the timely action of Police saved a family from meeting a tragic end.
