Missing Kangan youth held, stopped from joining militancy: Police

Missing Kangan youth, Shafat Yousuf Malik was arrested along with arms and ammunition in Handwara, police said on Friday. The police said the youth, a resident of Thune Kangan, in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district was prevented from joining a militant outfit.

A police spokesman said that Malik was provided with armsand ammunition by a militant group and was on way to join proscribed Hizb ulMujahideen outfit. “With his arrest Malik was restrained from joining themilitant outfit,” he said.

   

Officials said that Malik, 25, son of Mohammad Yosuf Malikhad left his home at Thune Kangan on April 29 morning for SMSHS hospitalSrinagar to have a health check up, but since then he had not returned.  They said his family members after failing totrace him, had filed a missing report at police station Kangan on April 30.

Police said after receiving the missing report, it had swunginto action and started the investigation through different angles. “Due to ourtimely action the youth was traced in Handwara area.”

“On a credible input, Handwara police along with securityforces intercepted a person at a checkpoint near Chowgal and took him intocustody,” the police spokesperson said.”Incriminating materials including arms andammunition were recovered from his possession,” he said.  “A case FIR No. 87/2019 under relevantsections of law has been registered at P/S Handwara. Further investigation intothe matter is going on,” he said.
