A mother and her daughter drowned on Saturday after they tried to cross the fast flowing Chillinallah in Doda district, the police said.
An official said the deceased identified as Sameena Begum(43) wife of late Mohammad Hussain and her daughter ZarinaBano (11) along with a group of women were heading backto their house in Batholi area after collecting Morchella (wild mushrooms) alsoknown as Guchhi from the woods when the accident occurred.
“The duo took turns to cross the fast flowing nallahusing a log. Zarina, went first. Unfortunately, her log twisted throwing herinto the fast flowing current. Sameena trying to pull her daughter to safetyalso fell into the water,” said Raj Singh Gouria, SP Bhadarwah.
“Frightened women accompanying the duo watched the twogetting quickly swept away by strong currents. They raised an alarm after which police was also informed. A policeparty from police station Gandoh reached the spot. Till then villagers hadmanaged to retrieve the bodies from the nallah,” the SP said.
He added that after completion of legal formalities thebodies will be handed over to the family members for last rights.
Villagers said that this is the 4th death during last twoyears in Chillinallah.
“Even after repeated requests to the administration failedto build a bridge for the locals here over this fast flowing nallah,” said thelocals.
