Multi-national road safety project ‘Vision Zero’ launched

In a bid to put in place a traffic system with no fatalities or serious injuries involving road traffic, ‘Vision Zero’, a multinational project was launched here on Tuesday.

 The project waslaunched by Kashmir Road Safety Foundation (KRSF), a voluntary group workingfor road safety in Kashmir. The project kicked off in an event organized byKRSF in collaboration with Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and Women’s college M.Aroad from college campus.

   

During the event, the organizers shed light on ‘Vision Zero’which is a multination road safety project. ‘Vision Zero’ which was firststarted in 1997 in Sweden was later adopted by United Nations and variouscountries including India.

The event was attended by various dignitaries including DCSrinagar, Dr Shahid Choudhary, Radio Jockey, Yusra Hussain.

During the event, DC Srinagar, who was also chief guest onthe occasion dwelled upon the importance of road safety and responsibilities ofadministration and citizens to contribute to the cause.

“We as administration are trying our best to put bettersystem in place which will make our roads safer. We have already putintelligent traffic system in place at various junctions in city and we arecurrently working on other initiatives which will help to realize the dream ofsmart Srinagar city with safe traffic system,” DC said.

 “Unless there areinstitutional changes, things won’t change the way we want them to. On the topof that every individual has to bring behavioral change in him and alsoeveryone has to start from individual level to prioritize road safety,” hesaid. 

Organizers said that they are going to organize road safetyevents in 30 colleges and higher secondary schools across Kashmir under ‘VisionZero’ project.

 “Our aim is to reducethe road accidents by helping to build a better traffic system and by bringingawareness. Our organization will organize on road activities and other programsto achieve our goal of reducing fatalities on road,”  said Nasir Khan, Chairman KRSF.

“As per the data of 2018, 900 lives were lost due to roadaccidents in J&K and our primary aim is to reduce it so that precious livesare saved,” he said.

Later KRSF also released a notebook themed on road safetywhich was distributed among the participating students.
