Kangan block in Ganderbal district which went to polls in the 2nd phase of the panchayat elections on Tuesday witnessed a narrow margin between the victory and the defeat for the contesting candidates.
Kangan block which recorded 27.3% voter turnout saw a neck and neck contest between the rival candidates particularly in four Sarpanch halqas which included Akhal-A, Akhal-B, Wangath-B and Chatergul-C.
Official sources said those who were declared winners after counting won by a narrow margin. They said in Wangath-B Sarpanch halqa a total of 516 votes were cast out of which 32 were rejected during counting.
One of the candidates got 243 votes while another secured 241 losing by a margin of just 2 votes.
Simarly, in Sarpanch halqa Chatergul, Akhal-A and Akhal-B the winning candidates were declared winners by a narrow margin of 2, 8 and 1 votes respectively. The contest in other panch wards was alike and the defeated candidates lost by a narrow margin.
An official told Greater Kashmir that the polling concluded peacefully.
Kangan block have 32 Sarpanch halqas and 248 panch wards out of which the contest was only in 4 sarpanch halqas and 3 panch constituencies.
Rest of the panchayat constituencies either were uncontested or vacant due to no nominations received.
