Navy officer dies fighting fire onboard INS Vikramaditya

A 30-year-old Indian Navy officer died Friday while “bravely” fighting a fire onboard aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya when it was entering the harbour in Karwar in Karnataka.

The Indian Navy said Lt Cdr DS Chauhan’s “daringefforts” prevented the fire from causing major damage to the combatcapability of the 44,500 tonne carrier.

   

Chauhan, who hails from Ratlam in Madhya Prtadesh, gotmarried only last month. He is survived by his mother and wife.

In a statement, the Navy said the fire was reported onboardINS Vikramaditya on Friday morning when the ship was entering the harbour inKarwar.

“The fire was brought under control by the ship’s crewin a swift action preventing any serious damage affecting the ship’s combatcapability,” it said.

A board of inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident.
