NC, PDP take out protest marches to defy highway closure ban

Two top regional parties — National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party — on Sunday took out protest marches in Srinagar to defy the government ban on movement of civilian vehicles on the highway which came into effect today.

National Conference President Farooq Abdullah led the protestof the party members from Athwajan on the highway. Addressing the reporters onthe occasion, Abdullah demanded an immediate end to the ban.

“It is a wrong order. They should use train service for themovement of the forces personnel. Or they can allow them to move during thenight so that people don’t have to suffer,” demanded Abdullah. ” This ordershould be revoked. It sounds like dictatorship.”

A similar protest was held by the Peoples Democratic Partywhich was led by former legislator Ashraf Mir.

The protesters raised slogans against the governoradministration for implementing the order.

“This ban on the movement of civilians is an injustice withthe people of Kashmir. I think our fundamental right is being violated,” saidMir.

The Jammu and Kashmir government had last week announcedthat the highway from Baramulla to Udhampur will be put out of bounds forcivilian traffic on Sundays and Wednesdays till May 31.
