Not allowing Afzal to meet family was mistake: Cong

Talking to media persons after casting his vote, Er Rashid said that admission of guilt by Congress legislators was a ‘victory of the people of Kashmir.’

Playing a sentimental card to retain a Rajya Sabha seat, Congress legislators owing allegiance to Ghulam Nabi Azad today admitted that not allowing Afzal Guru to meet his family before being hanged was a mistake.

Five MLAs- G M Saroori, Vikar Rasool, Haji Rashid, Muhammad Amin Bhat and GulzarWani – in a desperate bid to see that Azad sails through the crucial election for RajyaSabha held Saturday, said in a signed statement that they support MLA Engineer Rashid’s demand for return of the mortal remains of Afzal to his family.

Talking to media persons after casting his vote, Er Rashid said that admission of guilt by Congress legislators was a ‘victory of the people of Kashmir.’

“The Congress MLAs have apologized, saying that not allowing Afzal’s family to meet him was a mistake and the demand for return of his mortal remains was a humanitarian issue,” Er Rashid said, adding that it was the demand of every Kashmiri and apology of Congress legislators is their victory.

He said that he voted for GhulamNabi Azad to defeat ‘nefarious designs of the BJP-PDP combine.’ “Bade GunahKoRoknayKeLiyeChotaGunahKiya (I committed a smaller sin to avoid bigger one),” he said, adding, “I can’t bring back Afzal Guru, but to beat communal, divisive and anti-state agenda of the BJP, I voted for Azad.”

Taking a dig at the BJP, Er Rashid said that he voted for Congress to stop GharWapsi, Article 370 and other such agendas of the saffron party.

In the written statement, the Congress MLAs have also assailed PDP on a statement issued regarding Afzal Guru. “The PDP has all along tried to exploit the sentiments of the people and encourage creation of hysteria and frenzy in the state,” the statement reads, adding, “PDP’s open collaboration with BJP is immoral, opportunistic and unjustified.”

“The demand made by Rashid for return of Guru’s mortal remains is a humanitarian issue,” they said, adding, “The views of Er Rashid regarding allowing a last meeting with his kith and kin are genuine and based on humanitarian values and denial of same was a mistake.”
