Noted Islamic scholar Aga Syed Fazlullah passes away

Aga Fazlullah breathed his last at his residence Shariat Abad Buldgam before his family members, said a family member.

Noted Islamic scholar Aga Syed Muhammad Fazlullah Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi, son of late Ayatullah Aga Syed Yousuf Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi of Budgam, who was the founder of Anjuman-e-Sharian Shian, passed away on Monday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 72.

As the word of his death spread, shopkeepers downed their shutters and other business establishments were also closed.

Aga Fazlullah breathed his last at his residence Shariat Abad Buldgam before his family members, said a family member. 

The deceased was brother of NC MLC Aga Syed Mehmood Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi, maternal uncle of Aga Syed Hassan Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi and maternal uncle of Press TV correspondent Syed Ali Safvi.

Aga Fazlullah had studied at prestigious Hawzah Ilmia Najaf for 10 years. He succeeded his father late Ayatullah Aga Syed Yousuf Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi as the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Anjuman-e-Sharian Shian, a position which he held for life.

A sea of mourners beating their chests rushed to his residence, wherefrom the funeral procession proceeded towards the shrine of grand Ayatullah Aga Syed Mehdi Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi. His funeral prayers were led by Aga Syed Baqir Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi.

Chief patron of JK Itteha-uld-Muslimeen Moulana Muhammad Abass Anari, Aga Syed Hassan Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi, Aga Syed Mehmood Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and others were also present. As per the family source the Fateha would be held on Friday.

Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani has expressed grief over the demise of Aga Syed Muhammad Fazlullah and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.

“Late Aga, who belonged to a well-known religious dynasty, was a man of virtue and a prominent religious cleric,” Geelani said in a statement.

Moulana Abass Ansari termed Aga's demise as a great loss to Kashmir. 

President of Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association and minister for sports Moulana Imran Raza Ansari and general secretary J&K Shia Association Abid Hussain Ansari expressed their grief and sorrow over the demise of Aga Syed Muhammad Fazlullah Al-Mousvi Al-Safvi and also condoled to the bereaved family for this great loss. 

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has condoled the demise of prominent Shia cleric and President,  Anjuman-e-Sharaiee Shia'an, Agha Syed Mohammad Fazalullah Al-Mosavi Al-Safavi who passed away today at his native place Budgam.

Recalling the contribution of Agha Fazalullah, the Chief Minister said he played an important role in the social, educational and spiritual awakening of his followers and was a great proponent of unity among all sects and views.

National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and working president Omar Abdullah expressed sorrow over the demise of Aga Syed Muhamamd Fazlullah. 

The Abdullah duo said in his demise the state had lost a prominent scholar of Islam who would be remembered for ages to come. Other senior NC leaders paid tributes to the deceased. A condolence meeting was held at the NC headquarters on Monday, where tributes were paid to the departed soul. 

Parwani Wilayat Jammu and Kashmir, J&K Bazm-e-Sadat Hamdani, Educational Trust Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Ahlibayt (AS) Foundation, All units of JK Anjuman-e-Sharian Shian mourned the demise of Aga Syed Muhammad Fazlullah and expressed solidarity with the bereaved. 

Aga Syed Fazlullah is likely to be succeeded by his son and scholar Aga Syed Muhammad Hadi.
