Omar questions domicile law for J&K

Former Jammu andKashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned the “suspect timing”of the domicile rules defined by the centre amid  prevailing situationowing to Covid-19 outbreak.

“Talk about suspecttiming. At a time when all our efforts & attention should be focused on the#COVID outbreak the government slips in a new domicile law for J&K. Insultis heaped on injury when we see the law offers none of the protections that hadbeen promised,” Omar wrote on Twitter.

Without naminganyone, Abdullah said the domicile law had forced even new political parties”created by Delhi’s blessings” to criticise the law.

” You can imaginehow hollow the domicile law is from the fact that even the new party createdwith Delhi’s blessings, whose leaders were lobbying in Delhi for this law, havebeen forced to criticise the #JKdomicilelaw,”. Omar wrote in anothertweet.

Omar’s responsecomes after Government of India spelled out the domicile laws for UnionTerritory of Jammu and Kashmir which says a person who has resided in Jammu andKashmir for a period of 15 years or has studied for a period of sevenyears  and appeared in Class 10th and 12th examination  in a schoolwithin the region shall be deemed to be the domiciles of Jammu and Kashmir now on. It also includes the children ofthe central government officials, who have served in Jammu and Kashmir fora period of ten years.
