Only youth can change Kashmir’s future: FinMin

“Only the youth can change the atmosphere in Kashmir. Governments will come and go but if the youth take an initiative, only then the future of Kashmir will change,” finance minister Haseeb Drabu has said.

Speaking to the Kashmiri youths at Sarhad school, Pune, the finance minister said, “Kashmir has a glorious history and a unique identity. Whether it is the translation of Rajatarangini into Marathi or reviving the memories of famous Kashmiri poet Mahjoor, such events will make the Kashmiris feel that India is their country and at the same time the people of India shall also identify themselves with the history of Kashmir,” Drabu, according to a statement, said.

“I am amazed that there are more than 150 Kashmiri students in Sarhad and they are living here for the past decade and a half happily mingling with the Marathi students,” he said .

The finance minister said, “I was myself out of Kashmir since 1980. I studied at JNU and then worked in Mumbai. My son was born in Mumbai. Today, if someone asks him about his home, he says it’s Mumbai. These things keep the nation  together.”

He said: “People say Kashmir is a political issue. However, I feel if appropriate efforts are made to preserve the social and cultural identity of

Kashmiris, they would realize that India is their closest and best alternative.”
