Patwaris nominated for exam duty, teachers take umbrage

An order issued by the sub district magistrate (SDM) Uri roping in patwaris for the conduct of board exams has raised controversy.

The SDM has issued the order nominating some patwaris as deputy magistrates for the JKBOSE exams of classes 10 and 12 beginning from October 22.

The SDM has nominated five Patwaris as deputy magistrates in five high and higher secondary schools in Uri area.

“Tehsildar Uri and Tehsildar Boniyar will keep overall supervision of the examination centres falling in their respective jurisdiction,” reads the order issued by SDM Uri on Saturday.

The order has however agitated the teaching community who have castigated the department for creating “trust deficit” in its own employees.

“Teachers are assigned the job of holding exams but when the examination staff is doubted at the first place, the overall process seems doubtful,” said President J&K Teachers Forum (JKTF), Abdul Qayoom Wani.

He said teachers evaluate students throughout their academic career and involving officers of other department to supervise exams is a “humiliation” to the teaching community.

“Patwaris are our brothers, we are not against them but holding exams does not fall within their domain,” Wani said and asked the government to revoked such orders.

Meanwhile J&K +2 Lecturers Association has also opposed the government decision.

“The department has officers of superior ranks like CEO, deputy CEOs, principals, senior lecturers and headmasters who could meticulously perform the monitoring duty as was the practice in the past,” said president of the association, Nayeem Ahmad Parray.

The association threatened to boycott the conduct of all examinations if people from other department are assigned the monitoring job.

“Officers in JK BOSE not below the rank of assistant secretaries should be allowed to enter the examination centers. Otherwise we won’t conduct any examination,” Parray said.

Director school education Kashmir (DSEK) G N Itoo said the matter will be taken up with deputy commissioner Baramulla.
