Kashmir’s pellet victims on Monday said that in absence of a comprehensive plan for their rehabilitation, many of them have been driven to desperation. They also said some NGOs have been collecting pocketing money that they collect from people for the welfare of pellet victims.

A group of pellet victims protesting under the banner of J&K Pellet Victims Association made this statement at the Press Enclave here. They urged the people to come forward and help them directly to stop misuse of donations.

“There are many people and some NGOs that are minting money in our name,” said Muhammad Ashraf Wani, a pellet victim.

“People also stopped helping us since there is a notion among people that we got compensation and jobs from the government which is not true. Only 13 of the 1250 (eye) pellet victims got jobs,” Wani said.

Another pellet victim Shabroza Jan from Pulwama who was hit by pellets in her left eye during 2016 said that she had to leave her studies because she underwent surgery during her matriculation exams.

“I cannot afford to continue my treatment too,” she said.

Many pellet victims said that they had to leave the treatment midway due to lack of resources while they are losing their vision day by day.

“I only went through treatment for two months after I was hit by pellets and after that I had to stop my treatment since I had no money. We want people to help us locally so that we don’t have to beg before the government,” said Amir Hussain, a pellet victim from Shopian.
