People throng slain youth’s home

People in droves visited the home of slain Awantipora youth, Rizwan Asad Pandit, on Wednesday to express condolences.

Rizwan, a school principal died in police custody during theintervening night of Monday and Tuesday. He was laid to rest on Tuesday nightat martyr’s graveyard in Awantipora.

   

Rizwan’s kin alleged that he was “badly tortured”in the police custody. “The multiple torture marks on his body wereclearly visible. The left side of his face had swelled up. He had a headinjury, besides his thighs had red and black spots,” said Hilal Ahmed Pandit,cousin of Rizwan.

Pandit demanded the culprits should be hanged to givejustice to the victim family.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in Awantipora onthe second straight day to mourn his killing.

All the shops and business establishments remained closedwhile the traffic was off the roads. Heavy deployment remained on various spotsacross the town to thwart protests.

Sources said a thin movement of traffic on Srinagar-Jammuhighway was seen. Contingents of police and paramilitary forces were deployedon various spots on the highway.

A senior police officer said the situation remained normalthroughout the day.

Mobile internet service remained suspended in Awantipora onsecond day. The Internet service as per an official was suspended “as aprecautionary measure” to prevent the spreading of rumours.
