Petition before NHRC over power crisis in Chenab valley

A rights activist has approached National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with a complaint regarding “electricity crisis” in the Chenab region of J&K triggered by the recent heavy snowfall.

The petition filed by rights activist Syed Mujtaba Hussain prays before the commission that the electricity from Dulhasti and Baghlihar power projects be provided to Chenab Valley to address the power crisis in the region.

“…(the) electricity to these areas may be provided from Dulhasti and Baghlihar power projects as these projects are situated in the home of Chenab valley,” the petition pleads.

The petition states that it is a “paradox” that the region despite being home to 390 MW Dulhasti project of the NHPC “has to face electricity crisis, especially during winter months”.

According to the petition Doda, Kishtwar and adjoining areas are without electricity for the last ten days and “this is not the first time.”
