Police 'assault, abuse' medical staff of SDH Magam in Qamarwari

Director Health Dr Saleem Ur Rehman said he has taken up the matter with Deputy Commissioner Srinagar.

Medics and paramedics at Sub-district hospital Magam have said that they were beaten and abused by police in Qamarwari area of Srinagar while they were heading towards work on Saturday morning.

They said that policemen stopped an ambulance carrying the hospital staff near Barthana Chowk in Qamarwari and dragged the driver out of the vehicle.

“The driver of the ambulance bearing registration number JK04-B 1177 of SDH Magam was dragged out of the vehicle and was thrashed ruthlessly while foul language was used against the female staff present in the vehicle,” said a doctor at the hospital.

He said that cops even strangulated the driver Tanveer Ahmad.

“He (policeman) hurled choicest abuses on the female staff and slapped a specialist doctor,” said another doctor who was also present in the ambulance.

Director Health Dr Saleem Ur Rehman said he has taken up the matter with Deputy Commissioner Srinagar.

“SSP Srinagar and IGP Kashmir have been apprised about the incident. Police officials have assured stringent action against those involved,” he said.
