Police constitutes SIT to probe minor’s killing

J&K police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of a minor in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The half-burnt body with a chopped arm of Umar Farooq (10) was recovered from a nallah near Gushi, here, on Thursday evening, three days after his missing report was filed.

His father identified him from his clothes on Thursday after his body was fished out from a local nallah.

A police spokesman in a statement last night said that an SIT has been constituted to investigate his death.

“This pertains to the missing report lodged in Kupwara about a minor boy Umar Farooq of Gulgam. The effort to trace this boy of our community/police since the day of his missing was on,” police official said.

The official said that with the recovery of the dead body, police has constituted a SIT to be headed by the ASP Kupwara and supervised by the District SSP Kupwara to investigate it. Police has also sought cooperation of general public for completion of investigation.

Yesterday, a sniffer dog was used to locate the missing boy but the dog could only sniff up to few kilometers, beyond that the sniffing too proved ineffective, Tehsildar Kupwara Shabir Ahmad told.

“From Awoora there was no trace of his body’s smell,” he added.

“In this incident, a case FIR 192/2018 under section 302, 363 RPC has already been registered in police station Kupwara,” he said.
