Police foil JRL march on Maqbool Butt anniversary, detain several activists

Police on Monday detained scores of the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) activists during a protest to demand the return of mortal remains of JKLF founder Maqbool Butt on his 35th death anniversary.

Scores of the JRL activists and supporters assembled at Maisuma and staged a protest to and demand the return of mortal remains of Butt and Afzal Guru who were buried at New Delhi’s Tihar jail following their execution.

   

Witnesses said that policemen deployed in the area swung into action and bundled the protesters in police vans. 

The JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for protests and shutdown today. 

Meanwhile, life remained paralyzed across Kashmir today due to the shutdown on Butt’s 35th death anniversary. 

All shops and other business establishments remained closed while public transport remained off the roads in summer capital Srinagar. However, private traffic plied on the city roads.
