Police foil weapon snatching attempt at Pampore

Police Thursday foiled an attempt by unknown persons to snatch a weapon from security personnel on duty at a branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Pampore.

A police officer said that two unidentified persons wearing Kashmiri Pheran attempted to assault a policeman with an axe with an intention to snatch his weapon.

However, the assault was countered by other policemen on duty, he said.

The attackers managed to escape from the scene.A team of police later reached the spot and started investigations into the incident.

“A case has been registered in this incident and investigations have been started,” an official said, adding police were accessing CCTV footage from the bank to identify the attackers.

Meanwhile, security forces launched cordon and search operation at Shariefabad and Eidgah areas of Tral in the police district Awantipora.

A police official while confirming the CASO said it was launched after “specific inputs” were received about presence of militants in these areas.

Security forces personnel comprising Jammu & Kashmir Police, Army’s 42 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cordoned off the areas to conduct searches.

The search was called off when no contact with any militant was established.
