Process for VC CUK’s selection begins; over 200 applications received

The hunt for appointment of a new Vice Chancellor (VC) for the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) has begun with over 200 applications received from the eligible candidate for the post.

The five-year tenure of the incumbent VC Prof Mehrajuddin Mir ended in September 2020. However, he was granted extension till the appointment of new VC for the university.

   

Prof Mir was appointed the VC CUK in September 2015 by the then President of India.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) constituted a high-level committee to draw a panel of names for the appointment of a new VC for CUK.

The members of the search committee include noted academician and former VC of the University of Kashmir, Jalees Ahmed Khan Tareen, Prof Jawahar, Prof S K Singh, Prof S P Singh and noted educationist Prof Ramabrahmam who is also the incumbent VC of the Central University of Odisha.

A top official said more than 200 applications had been received from the eligible applicants for these posts.

These include some professors from the CUK as well.

“The search committee constituted by the Government of India convened its first meeting in January first week this year to scrutinise the applications of the candidates,” a top official said.

He said that there was no development in the selection process as the committee was yet to convene its second meeting to hold interactions with the shortlisted candidates.

“Of the 200 applications received, the search committee shortlists around 10 to 20 candidates in the first meeting and calls them for interaction with the committee in the second meeting,” he said. “The committee will finalise a panel of three or five candidates in the third meeting and submit it to the President of India for his approval to appoint one candidate as the new VC for of the university.”

The official said that the committee might soon convene its second meeting for the interaction with the shortlisted candidates.

Meanwhile, the process for appointment of the VC for the Cluster University Srinagar (CUS), SKUAST-Kashmir and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) Rajouri was under way for the past many months.

The search committee in October 2020 submitted the panel of candidates to the Chancellor for his approval to appoint a new VC for BGSBU.

However, the government is yet to finalise the appointment.

The search committee constituted to draw a panel of candidates for the appointment of VC for CUS has shortlisted the names of the candidates out of 53 applications received for the post.

“The committee is likely to hold interaction with the shortlisted candidates next week and may submit the panel of candidates to the Chancellor,” he said. “The process may be completed by this month.”

The process for selection of the VC for SKUAST-Kashmir is also under way for the past many months.
