Professor Riyaz Punjabi conferred Padma Shri

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir Prof Riyaz Punjabi has been conferred with this year’s Padma Shri award in the category of literature and education.

Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan.  The award is given to citizens of India to recognize their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Medicine, Social Service and public life.

Prof Riyaz Punjabi presently Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir holds the degree of Doctorate in Law and has been a Professor in the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has taught Law in the Faculty of Law, University of Jammu and Faculty of Law, University of Kashmir. He has held the positions of Chairman, Department of Distance Education and Dean, Faculty of Non-formal  Education in the University of Kashmir. He was Director, Correspondence Courses, Director, Centre for Adult, Continuing and Extension Education and Director, State Resources Centre in the University of Kashmir.

He has been a Visiting Fellow on Human Rights in the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, Visiting Professor, Academy of Third World Studies, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi and Visiting Fellow in the Centre for South Asian Studies, Switzerland. He is the Honorary Director, European Institute, New Delhi and (Hony.) President, International Centre for Peace Studies, New Delhi. He is the (Hony.) Editor, Journal of Peace Studies, New Delhi since 1994.

Prof Riyaz Punjabi has lectured in the Universities and Research Institutions in different parts of Asia, Europe, Africa, Canada and Australia. He has participated in more than 30 International Conferences in Europe, US, UK, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Turkey, Croatia, Bangladesh, Africa and China and contributed research papers in these International Conferences.

He has authored 6 books on Distance Learning, Peace Studies, International Peace and Security, Globalization, Sufism and Culture. He has contributed Chapters in 12 Edited Volumes and authored about 20 Occasional Papers and Monographs. He has contributed more than 200 Research papers in National and International Journals on diverse themes and subjects.

Prof Riyaz Punjabi was awarded ‘Socrates Award 2008’ and nominated for the title of “Honorary Professor for the International University, Vienna” for contribution in “strengthening international relations in the sphere of education”. Award was announced by Europe Business Assembly (EBA) in Oxford, London, The Rector, International University, Vienna and President of the Club of the Rectors of Europe (Twenty European Universities) in January, 2008. This Award came for the first time to Asia. He was awarded the Amity Academic Excellence Award 2009 by Amity International Business School, Amity University, Noida, UP.  Prof Punjabi has made immense contribution in the field of Kashmir Studies also.
