Protests in Kulgam as militants, forces exchange gunfire afresh

The firefight between militants and government forces broke again Friday morning after hitting a long pause during the night at Chenigam in Kulgam.

The guerillas fired indiscriminately today morning after forces, thinking that all the militants have been killed, approached the debris of a house near the encounter site.

At least four houses have been razed to ground after forces blew them up by planting IEDs.

Earlier, a police spokesman in Srinagar said two militants have been killed in the encounter which started on Thursday after a joint party of police and Army was fired at by the militants.

The spokesman said the identity of the dead militants is being ascertained, adding that arms and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site.

Meanwhile, people have taken to streets in Chenigam and adjoining villages, including Frisal to protest against the forces.

They were raising slogans in favour of freedom.
