Pulwama: Slain cop’s family stages protest at I-Day venue

Family members of a slain policeman Saturday staged protest against the administration here for “skipping his name and ignoring his sacrifice” during the I-Day function here.

The family members of the policeman, Anoop Singh, including the deceased’s wife and children were invited to the I-Day function, they said.

Singh was killed by suspected militants in Prichoo village of Pulwama on May 21.  “We were invited here but they didn’t even mention my husband’s name. He laid down his life for nation,” said Pummy, wife of Singh. “These district officers appreciated the role of doctors, journalists, municipality employees and presented awards and certificates to them and also to school-going children but ignored my husband who died for the nation.”

Singh’s daughter said the authorities told her they forget to mention her father’s name. “It is shocking.  How can they ignore my father’s sacrifice for the nation? How can they present award to those employees who took part in fumigation process but forget those who laid down his life for nation,” she said.

She said besides her late father, her uncle too was a policeman who too was killed in an IED blast in Srinagar some years ago.

“But the officers didn’t even bother to mention the names of slain policemen,” she said.

Divisional commissioner Kashmir, PK Pole said: “It shouldn’t have happened.  Tomorrow, the officers will go to their home for formal recognition and handing them certificate”.  Besides, we will try to help the family,” he said.
