RTI Movement condemns ‘harassment’ of activists

Jammu and Kashmir RTI Movement on Wednesday alleged that government officials were resorting to “harassment” against RTI activists.

In a statement, Chairman RTI Movement, Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat, condemned registration of a case against RTI activist, Sajad Hussain of Chadoora.

He demanded that a high level probe be held against the Municipal Committee Chadoora where funds meant for civic amenities have been “mismanaged for the last many years.”

Bhat hailed former Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah, noted activist and Magsaysay awardees, Aruna Roy and former Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi for condemning the incident of harassment of Hussain.

“In the past also RTI activists were booked under fake charges in Budgam for demanding transparency and accountability. Instead of taking action against the corrupt officials especially those involved in bungling of public funds, authorities are targeting public spirited citizens. If this continues nobody would raise voice against corruption and there will be chaos all around J&K. We condemn this incident and appeal Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, CIC Bimal Julka, Chief Secretary BVR Subramanium and DGP Dilbagh Singh to intervene in the matter” Bhat said.
