‘Sans hygiene, students suffer in IUST girls’ hostel’

The students of Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora, Sunday alleged that the girls’ hostel is functioning in unhygienic conditions.

They claimed that several of them have fallen ill due tolack of hygiene in the mess, use of sub-standard food ingredients and impurewater.

   

“A few weeks ago, we were fed half-cooked chicken. As aresult, many of us fell ill. When we complained to the authorities, we werereprimanded and warned to not disclose it,” a student, wishing anonymity, said.

Accusing the University authorities of failing to providebasic facilities, another student said, “They (authorities) always showcaseindifference. Even after we informed them about the issues, nothing has beendone.”

The students complained that sanitation usually remains poorand the hostel always carries a stench. “Besides, the room used for storingfood ingredients remains crammed, developing fungi,” they said.

On being contacted, Dean, Students Welfare IUST, Dr Anisa,told Greater Kashmir that she did not know anything about it. “No one hasactually approached me with such a complaint. If anyone is facing a problem inthe hostel, they are free to come and contact me. I assure you that theirproblems will be addressed,” Anisa said.
