Sarjan Barkati’s family stages protest in Shopian, seeks his release

The family members and relatives of Sarjan Barkati on Monday staged a sit in protest in south Kashmir’s Shopian town demanding his immediate release. Barkati, a resident of Reban Shopian was arrested during 2016 unrest and was later lodged in a Jammu jail.

Carrying placards, they held the sit-in for several hours onbusy Batapora crossing, leading to traffic congestion almost in entire town.

   

“We are not feeling safe at our home as recently therewas a murderous attack on my mother,” said Sugra, daughter of Barkati.

Sugra said after the attack they also held a protest inSrinagar and demanded justice but to no avail.

She said that the continuous detention of her father hadaffected her and her brother’s education badly.

The family demanded immediate release of Barkati.
