Sgr-Leh highway likely to open after May 15

Border Roads Organization (BRO) officials said that there was heavy snow this year as compared last year.

The snow clearance operation on the strategic 434 km long Srinagar-Leh Highway, the only road linking the Ladakh with rest of Jammu and Kashmir that was started last month is going on in full swing, the border road organisation officials said on Sunday. The highway was closed in January this year following heavy snowfall.

Border Roads Organization (BRO) officials said that there was heavy snow this year as compared last year.

"About 40 feet of snow accumulated on the road along Zojila pass on the highway."

Chief Engineer BRO Brig A K Das said the snow clearance work is going on in full swing,  adding that the heavy snowfall this year is likely to delay opening of the Srinagar-Leh road.

"The snow clearance operation on the Srinagar-Leh road is going on in  full swing however we are facing a tough situation due to heavy snowfall and frequent snow slides along the road," the official said. 

He said that it is expected that the snow clearance work will be completed by May 15,  if weather remained favorable, adding that only then after assessing the road conditions the decision to allow traffic on the road will be taken" he said. 

The Chief  Engineer said the Srinagar-Leh highway opening is likely to get delayed due to heavy snowfall this year, adding that the highway is likely to be thrown open for vehicular traffic only after 15th May.
