Shopian-Aharbal road in shambles

Authorities here have failed to repair a vital road connecting main town of Shopian district with famous tourist destination Aharbal.

The 15-km long road is dotted with potholes causing immense problems to the commuters as well as people who visit Aharbal waterfall.

The road passes through several villages including Chotipora and Sedow. A resident of Chotipora said the road has caved in at several places and at some other spots partitions of the road have eroded, making it dangerous for travel.

“Despite the fact that this road connects one of the famous tourist destination the authorities are unmoved to repair it. A mere shower turn entire stretch of the road into a cesspool, making it out of bounds for commuters” said Bashir Ahmad, another local.

He said during winters the road remains blocked most of the time due to the dilapidated condition.

“The soil erosion and landslides has now become a routine feature along the entire stretch of the road during inclement weather conditions,” said Gulzar Ahmad Malik, a driver.

Superintending Engineer R&B department Parvez Ahmad said the department has taken the matter of road development with higher authorities.

He said Deputy Commissioner Shopian and other officials recently visited the area to assess the situation.

We are hopeful that necessary action will be taken soon,” he said.
