Shopian killings contain spark for a strong public reaction: Soz

Former union minister, Prof Saif ud Din Soz on Monday said the bloodbath in Shopian has awakened a “new consciousness” among the Kashmiris.

In a statement here today, he said, “it may not have carried any message to New Delhi but it is the widespread feeling in every nook and corner of Kashmir that all these killings constitute a situation of deliberate attempt to kill in utter violation of Standard Operating Procedure.”

He said the time had come that the so-called mainstream including the PDP took notice of these killings which contain the spark for a strong public reaction.

“Yasin Malik, JKLF chief and member of the Joint Hurriyat Conference, perhaps, rightly evoked divine retribution for the mainstream politicians including the PDP leaders who only issue the statements of sympathy without any resolve to talk to Delhi, decisively,” he said.

“I feel sad as to why the Chief Minister continues to issue statements sympathizing with the victim families, who are now in thousands! Why can’t she think of going to PM Modi and straightaway telling him that this kind of situation is not acceptable to Kashmiris and the dialogue for resolution of the Kashmir dispute happens to be a compulsion created by the circumstances?”

Soz said there “is a feeling in Kashmir that each time she goes to Delhi and wants to discuss the miseries of Kashmiris, PM Modi and others successfully persuade her to be in the ‘Seat of Power’.”

“The Shopian killings have moved Yasin Malik to seek ‘Divine Retribution’ for the mainstream politicians and I feel he had a reason to go this way,” Soz said.
