Shopian shuts on third straight day to mourn militant, civilian killings

A complete shutdown is being observed on the third consecutive day today in Shopian district against the killing of two local Hizbul Mujahideen militants and a civilian on Wednesday.

All shops, business establishments, government and private offices remained closed in the district while public and private transport was off the roads.

   

Two Hizb militants Sameer Ahmad Wani alias Maviya and Firdous Ahmad Lone alias Umar Bhai, were killed in a gunfight with government forces at Chaigund village of Shopian district on Wednesday night. A 17 year old civilian namely Shakir Ahmed Mir was also killed during the gun battle between militants and forces.

People from adjoining areas thronged the residences of slain militants and the civilian to express sympathy and solidarity with their families.

Contingents of police and CRPF troopers are deployed at sensitive locations in the district to thwart any “element of violence”, an official said.

Meanwhile, mobile internet service remain suspended on fourth straight day after authorities snapped the service on Wednesday following the gunfight.
