The state human rights commission Tuesday asked the government’s power development department to explain frequent and unscheduled power cuts in Kashmir as freezing weather grips the valley.

Chairperson J&K SHRC, Justice (Rtd) Bilal Nazki issued a notice to chief engineer of the Power Development Department, acting up on a complaint about unannounced power outages that cause immense hardships to students and other residents alike.

Large parts of Kashmir have been reeling under darkness amid a cold wave and the ongoing wet weather spell.

Nazki directed the PDD chief engineer to file a report within a week specifying why power cuts are affected without notice.

Complaints of frequent and unscheduled power cuts are widespread across the valley and the main city of Srinagar, in both metered and unmetered areas.

“The people of Kashmir especially students are appalled at the hide and seek of electricity. No power schedule is being followed by the power department here,” a resident of Srinagar said.

Last week, the entire Kashmir valley went without electricity for more than 20 hours after a sudden snowfall damaged supply infrastructure.

Allegations are widespread that the incumbent administration is in a slumber with the people demanding to prioritise solving the crisis of electricity supply during the winter months.
