Shutdown in north Kashmir’s Sopore after local militant killed in Shopian gunfight

Shutdown is being observed in Sopore area of north Kashmir’sBaramulla district against the killing of a local militant in a gunfight withthe security forces in Shopian district on Friday.

Reports said that a militant, identified as Ishfaq AhmadSofi alias Abdullah Bhai from Model Town Sopore, was killed in a brief gunfightwith the forces in Amshipora-Ramnagri village of Shopian early morning.

   

However, officials were yet to confirm the identity of theslain militant.

An official said that the gunfight broke out after the jointteams of the army and the state police launched a search operation in thevillage. “A militant was killed in the gunfight. Arms and ammunition wererecovered from the gunfight site. The identity of the slain militant is beingascertained,” he said.

An eye witness said that all shops and other businessestablishments are closed in Sopore town while public transport is off theroads.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Baramulla has ordered theclosure of all schools and colleges in Sopore sub-division.

“In view of the prevailing situation and aprecautionary measure, all schools, higher secondaries and degree colleges,both private or Govt run in sub division Sopore, shall remain closed today onMay 10,” read the order.
