Shutdown, protests in Anantnag

Violent protests erupted in Anantnag town in south Kashmir on Saturday against the “thrashing of local youth in Chandigarh yesterday”.

The youth took to streets in Lal Chowk area of the town today morning and staged protests against the attacks on people of Kashmiri origin outside the state following Pulwama attack.

Shouting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, the youth displayed photographs of a local who was thrashed in Chandigarh yesterday by a mob.

Police tried to pacify the protesters, but they didn’t relent, leading to clashes.

The protesting youth pelted the forces with stones who in turn lobbed tear shells.

The clashes soon spread to adjoining old town areas including Reeshi Bazar.

A 45-year-old passerby was injured after he was hit by a stone on the head during the ensuing clashes.

The injured man identified as Abdul Razak Bhat of adjoining Lalan- Ganoor village was shifted to district hospital Anantnag and later referred to SKIMS.

Mohammed Vikas Malik, a resident of Anantnag town, who is pursuing Bachelor degree in Technology (B Tech) from a college in Mohali was reportedly thrashed by a mob yesterday.

A spontaneous shutdown was also observed in Lal Chowk and some other old town areas.

However, the Khanbal-Pahalgam (KP) road stretch of town only remained partially shut.

People also alleged the forces of beating up pedestrians.

“I was on way to my shop when the CRPF men stopped me and swung Lathis on me,” alleged a youth wishing anonymity.
