Employees at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Friday evening called off their indefinite strike after authorities assured them to redress their grievances.
The employees including ward officers and field staff went on strike on Thursday to demand increasing man power, making available all necessary equipments to sanitation teams, stop gap arrangements and other demands.
The strike severely affected the sanitation in the summer capital with garbage spilled on streets.
Agitating employees, however, said they were left with no choice as their demands had not been met. As part of their agitation, employees held a protest at SMC lawns. Later in the day, authorities invited agitating employees for talks and assured them redressal of grievances and meeting of all “genuine demands.”
The meeting was attended by acting president SMC Employees Union Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, president SMC Field Staffers, Choudhary Mehraj-ul-Din Bujja, SMC Transport Union Fayaz Ahmad Mir, chairman Municipal Employees Union Ghulam Muhammad Solina, Nazir Ahmad Khan, Mudasir Ahmad and Nazir Ahmad Munshi.
