Snow jams city

Srinagar city roads Saturday witnessed chaos as commuters had to struggle to move every inch amid traffic jams.

The accumulation of snow made roads slippery as the authorities failed to clear the roads of snow immediately.

Massive traffic jams were witnessed at Jahangir Chowk, M A Road, Residency Road, Regal Chowk, Dalgate, Tourist Reception Centre, Rambagh, Natipora, Channapora, Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh, Sonwar, Sanat Nagar, Batamaloo, Bemina,  Rainawari, Soura and other prominent roads throughout the day.

The Press Enclave also witnessed traffic jams due to the accumulated snow and media person found it hard to find space to park their vehicles.

“The claims of the authorities have proven wrong. They just hold meetings about preparedness but are never prepared to tackle the situation post snowfall,” said Haroon Nabi, a journalist struggling to park his vehicle at the Press Enclave.

He said that he took more than an hour to reach Press Enclave from Dalgate due to gridlock on the M A Road and Residency Road.

“The authorities have failed to clear the snow from vital roads and commuters are suffering,” he said.

People complained that snow was not cleared from roads, by-lanes and lanes in Srinagar.

“There are already huge mounds of snow lying on footpaths and roadsides. Now the fresh snowfall has occupied entire area where one could walk. It is also risky to walk on the main road as applying brakes is dangerous,” said Danish Ahmad, a commuter at Residency Road.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Police closed some of the U-turns and crossing points.

The commuters said that the Traffic Police was doing an excellent job amid snowfall but accused the authorities of not clearing snow from the roads to avoid traffic jams.

“The roads are slippery and we have to avoid accidents. The best thing we can do to avoid any untoward incident is to drive at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour,” said Musaib, a commuter. “The authorities should clear snow to ensure a smooth passage of the vehicles.”

People living in interior areas of Srinagar city complained that the authorities had not cleared snow from the lanes and by-lanes that had hit the movement of pedestrians.
