Though the first snowfall this year after a long dry spell brought joy to hundreds of tourists visiting Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, the road leading to this famous resort has been closed due to slippery road conditions.

Sonamarg and its adjoining areas received the season's fresh snowfall since Monday. Hundreds of tourists including children were seen enjoying the snowfall at Gagangeer, a village several kilometers before Sonamarg.

"We are really enjoying the snowfall, we feel lucky that we witnessed it this time, at the same time we feel unfortunate for not being able to visit Sonamarg" a group of tourists from Mumbai said.

"We were here for couple of days and were eagerly waiting for the snow this time," another tourist from Bangalore said.

Deputy commissioner Ganderbal, Dr Piyush Singhla, told Greater Kashmir that the road was closed as a precautionary measure in view of the slippery road conditions and chances of skidding.

"The road usually remains closed during winter owing to heavy snowfall in the area and chances of snow avalanches and slides along the route,” the DC said.

Hoteliers and pony-wallas here were expecting that good number of tourists would visit here after the snowfall.

"Tourists always love snow and we expect that number of tourists will increase in coming days after the snow which will have a good impact on our business,” a hotelier said.

However he was quick to add that the closure of the Srinagar-Sonamarg road during winters is a major setback to hoteliers, traders and pony-wallas in the area.
